Lights, Camera, Action

Leslie Fedock is a senior Communication Arts major here at Malone University. From a young age Leslie demonstrated a strong interest in performing. During her high school years Leslie participated in cheerleading, band and choir. Many of those activities have followed her into college. She plays an active role in the Malone University Chorale, Chamber Choir, and has also participated in the University Band and MeTV, the university's television station. Every Monday she can be heard on Malone University's Edge Radio where she is co-host with David Lewis. Whether it is on stage, behind the scenes, or in the classroom, Leslie is making her way towards a career centered in media and broadcasting.

When asked about her passion for performance and her interest in broadcasting she credits Robin Swoboda as a major influence. Robin Swoboda became one of Cleveland’s most respected and well-loved personalities during her many years anchoring the nightly news. Her down-to-earth style and warm sense of humor made people feel like she was one of the family. Robin became a household name in Northeast Ohio when she served as co-anchor on TV-8 along side her good friends Tim Taylor and Dick Goddard.

She then spent 3 and a half years co-hosting the morning show on 95.5 The Fish, believing the mission of the radio station was consistent with her beliefs and value system.

A strong advocate for life, marriage and the family, Robin has become a popular speaker for groups of various backgrounds. From church groups to motivational business meetings, Robin's sense of humor and insights make her a hit with all that hear her. (Robinswoboda.com)

This very character is what stood out to Leslie and encouraged her that she too could be a newswoman or television personality someday that wears her faith on their sleeve. Robin has a bold personality and energetic approach to life and media.

Leslie remembers seeing Robin Swoboda on television at a young age and claims that she was the one person on the news that she always recognized. Robin Swoboda stood out to her. Robin Swoboda even made an appearance at Leslie's home church in Smithville, Ohio for a women's conference and dinner.

Leslie was able to intern with 95.5 The Fish several summers ago where she worked with the promotions department. She went to many events such as concerts and festivals where she handed out Fish merchandise and manned the Fish tent with Len Howser. Leslie also sent out prizes to designated winners. Through this experience Leslie became more familiar with both Robin Swoboda and Len Howser. Along with 95.5 The Fish, Leslie also worked with 95.9 The Light--another Christiam radio station. There she worked on billing, recording commercials and the community calendar. She also had the opportunity to go to the Alive Christian Music Festival with The Light and did artist interviews!

As Leslie's concentration on Communication and media increased she developed a greater appreciation for Robin Swoboda's gift. According to Leslie, Robin gives people the news but she still shows her character and faith. It was beneficial to see Robin on air for so many years, especially beginning at a young age. As Robin has changed gears from news to radio, and back to television, Leslie has kept up with her and continued her role as a faithful viewer. Robin Swoboda's most recent "gig", "That's Life with Robin Swoboda" is a new favorite for Leslie and has revived inspiration to pursue her career in media. Leslie describes Robin's new show as homey, laid back and human-interest focused. Robin isn't scared to get silly and kid around with those on her show. She appears to talk about whatever is on her mind or heart. She exhibits a certain degree of freedom and confidence in herself that appeals to Leslie.

Without the inspiration that Leslie found in Robin Swoboda, her college/career path might have taken a different turn. Robin stands as a positive female role model in the media world and a constant encouragement to young viewers all over the state.
